Surprisingly, the Kia company started without any connection to cars. It was first called Kyungsung Precision Industry, making steel tubes and bicycle parts. In 1952, it was renamed Kia Industries and began to make motorcycles and trucks by 1957. After a bankruptcy in 1997, it sold a 33% stake to Hyundai, which then became a minority owner.
